Your progress (and your horse’s training) will always be limited by YOU and YOUR SEAT (sorry, but it's true!)

YOU CAN FIX THE TOP PROBLEMS THAT ARE HOLDING YOU BACK FROM RIDING BETTER

No amount of lessons with big-name trainers, symposiums, practicing tests, or "training" will help until you identify exactly what is holding you back (so that you can FIX it).

Placeholder Image

The fact is, you are likely more than AWARE of your seat problems (they are perhaps even painfully obvious)

But the advice you are following never seems to fix it. (no matter how hard you try)

• You never feel like you can sit "into" your horse. (Riding in Harmony? Becoming "one" with your horse? That feels like a far-fetched fantasy at this point.)

• You watch your Dressage Idols and wonder why you can't sit like them. (Are they even human?!?)

• It feels like an uphill battle (and you'll die of old age before you get this figured out.)

• Watching videos or seeing photos of yourself are just... cringe-worthy (why isn't there a filter for THAT?!)
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image

Sometimes it even feels like there's no point to keep trying ...
sometimes it seems the HARDER you try the WORSE it gets.

(if you're trying HARDER at the wrong things and in the wrong way, you are only making the same problems... worse.)
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image

YOU GET IN YOUR OWN WAY.

Your attempts to TRY HARDER or DO MORE or DO BETTER actually are doing the opposite. They actually make you ride worse and sets in motion a downward spiral. Pretty soon you believe you are incapable and this makes you ride even worse. You have to break that cycle.

GETTING GOOD ONGOING SEAT COACHING IS OFTEN LIMITED BY LOCATION, FINANCES, AND HORSE SUITABILITY.

Bad seat coaching is even more detrimental to none at all, but what do you do if you have no one around that is good at coaching for the seat? Sometimes the problem is not availability but the inability to shell out hundreds of dollars every week for seat lessons. Or sometimes the problem is the lack of a good schoolmaster to ride in longe lessons who can give you the correct feel. There is NO point taking longe lessons on a stiff horse who only teaches you only how to brace your own body against the horse's stiff movement - THAT is not what riding is about!
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image

YET THE SEAT IS THE NUMBER 1 THING THAT HOLDS YOU BACK.

It is ironic that the one thing that is most holding you back, the one thing that you are most eager and willing to work on, is the one thing that is the HARDEST to get help with. You have tried all of the available options and nothing makes any significant improvement.
Placeholder Image

but, my friend, THERE IS, IN FACT, ONE THING YOU HAVE NOT YET TRIED

Placeholder Image

There is, in fact, a solution which is so different, that it is no wonder you had not considered it before.
...and we don't want you to be in misery any longer, so we want to share it with you!

WE FOUND A BETTER WAY

Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Briefly, "we" are Thomas and Shana Ritter. We run the Artistic Dressage Program, where we educate riders how to train their horses themselves, in accordance with classical principles and biomechanics. Thomas is the author of two books (and many eBooks), with another on the way.
We used to subscribe to the "many hours at the longeline" prescription. Now, don't misunderstand me, longe lessons are invaluable. But they were only a small part of the equation. And many riders do not have access to good quality longe lessons (and bad ones could be even worse than none at all).

Just "doing your time" being jostled around at the longeline, ENDURING the horse's movement, doesn't actually do anything at all to develop your seat.

The crucial component to make those longe lessons "effective", we discovered, was the right combination of tactical instruction and imagery exercises.

And then we discovered that riders could apply these exercises AT ANY TIME (even when NOT on the horse at all), and their riding and seat dramatically improved.

But then something else happened that DRAMATICALLY changed our entire approach (and accelerated the rate of progress in our students 10-fold).
Placeholder Image
One day we received an email from a new student in one of our courses. It just turned out that she was a Feldenkrais Practitioner. I had heard of Feldenkrais, and knew that it could be a revolutionary approach to help athletes of all sorts (and humans, in general). But, admittedly, we had no first-hand experience with Feldenkrais, and honestly had no idea exactly HOW revolutionary it could be!

So, a really interesting series of conversations ensued.
The result was a collaboration between all of us. Her name is Catherine McCrum and she is a Feldenkrais Practioner and Gestalt Psychotherapist located in London U.K.

Together we have explored applying Feldenkrais concepts to riders and horses, and subsequently Catherine has enriched most of our online courses with her Feldenkrais lessons.

The results for the students should not have been such a big surprise for us. We knew it would be helpful, but we did not realize just how much it would revolutionize the way students develop their seats.

A TRIFECTA APPROACH...

Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image
Causes not Symptoms...
Rather than covering up symptoms with band-aid remedies, we go to the root of the matter to unearth the cause of all the problems. Most approaches just address the symptoms of the problem which just creates more stiffness for the rider. Fixing the source of the problem frees the rider to move and balance dynamically with the motion of the horse.
Powerful Imagery...
Often the best way to educate the body is through the power of visualization. We employ feeling-rich imagery lessons which convey not only the best way to sit, but also the best way to accommodate and shape the movement of the horse. Riders can use imagery on and off the horse, so that progress can be made even while not riding.
Movement Lessons...
Feldenkrais "Awareness through Movement" lessons re-educate the body how to move in a way that is efficient, healthy, and restores your natural balance and suppleness. These movement lessons can be done anytime, any place, expanding your opportunities to improve your seat well beyond the hours you are in the saddle.
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image

What will it be like for you to sit and ride well when
you implement these tools in your riding?

Placeholder Image

RIDE WITH EASE AND BALANCE

When you are no longer struggling with your balance (especially in transitions), this frees you up to sit with more ease and to give your aids with clarity and precision. This is the path to Finer Riding.
Placeholder Image
Placeholder Image

YOUR HORSE'S TOPLINE CAN DEVELOP CORRECTLY

When your seat is no longer preventing the horse from using his back well, your horse can finally use the correct muscles in the correct way. The back comes up, the topline musculature (neck, back, and loin) are gymnastically developed, and the horse is ABLE to use himself correctly.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR HORSE IMPROVES

When your horse is no longer confused by the contradictions between your seat, aids, and intentions, communication improves and the rapport flourishes. This is essential for developing trust and confidence.

WHAT WE ARE COVERING

Placeholder Image

RIDER ISSUE #1: NOT RIDING FORWARD ENOUGH

Not riding forward enough causes the horse to lack engagement, preventing collection.

RIDER ISSUE #2: FRONT-TO-BACK RIDING

Creates a horse that is tight and contracted in his body, and whose hind legs cannot be properly reached and influenced.

RIDER ISSUE #3: TIGHT HIPS

Tight hips creates atrophy of the horse's back muscles, loss of impulsion and engagement, and behavioral problems.

RIDER ISSUE #4: DIGGING SEAT BONES

This can  damage the horse's back and topline musculature, upset the horse's balance and gaits, and cause pain for the horse.

RIDER ISSUE #5: GRIPPING LEGS

This creates a lethargic horse who lacks impulsion and braces with his belly muscles, stiffness in the horse's ribcage, and stiffness in the rider's hips.

RIDER ISSUE #6: TIPPING FORWARD

This can upset the horse's balance, be dangerous for the rider, get the horse behind the aids, and create behavioral issues in the horse.

RIDER ISSUE #7: PUMPING TORSO

Also can show up as a pushing pelvis. This can be caused by an incorrect management between the upper and lower body. It can create a stiff horse which braces against the rider's movement.

RIDER ISSUE #8: COLLAPSING WAIST

The standard correction for this common issue actually makes matters worse by creating further stiffness and crookedness in the rider's body.

RIDER ISSUE #9: NOISY LOWER LEG

This can exacerbate the horse's lack of responsiveness or perpetuate the rider's tightness higher in the body.

RIDER ISSUE #10: LACK OF CONFIDENCE

When the rider lacks confidence, this affects everything else. It betrays the rider's intention, often perpetuating the fear/insecurity cycle.

RIDER ISSUE #11: SLOUCHY SHOULDERS

Another issue where the standard, conventional "correction" not only doesn't fix the issue, but it makes things worse by introducing new patterns of tension and stiffness.

RIDER ISSUE #12: UPPITY HEELS

If you have been told "heels down" ad nauseum and it still hasn't improved, you will love this alternative approach!

BUT THEN LOOK AT ALL THE  BONUS RECORDINGS:

01.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SEAT (even when you're unable to ride regularly)

These are weird times! Even in the best of times, though, circumstances can get in the way of being able to ride regularly. We will give you tips and steps you can take to make sure you not only don't backtrack in your non-riding time, but that you actually IMPROVE your riding.
02.
HOW TO USE THE POWER OF IMAGERY AND VISUALIZATION LIKE AN OLYMPIAN

All top athletes use the power of imagery and visualization to improve their performance. In fact, studies have even shown they are able to improve through these techniques even when they are unable to train. We will talk about how you, too, can use these techniques to become the best rider possible.
03.
HOW TO BECOME YOUR OWN "SEAT COACH"

Perhaps you don't have access EVER to a good seat coach, or perhaps you have just found that you are temporarily on your own. Never fear! We will teach you how you can use the feedback from the horse to become your own coach and trainer for your own seat.
04.
THE "SEAT CORRECTIONS" THAT ARE ACTUALLY MAKING YOU RIDE WORSE

Not all advice is good or correct. There are many seat corrections that are taught that are not only incorrect, but they make matters worse. We will look at the most common ones, and discuss why they are incorrect, where the problem is, and what to do instead.
05.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE TIPS FOR SITTING THE TROT BETTER

We will share the top tips we give to our own students and have used ourselves to maximize trot sittability. But we won't stop with that. We will also share how you can use the seat to improve the quality of the horse's trot.
06.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE TIPS FOR RIDING THE CANTER BETTER

We will share the top tips we give to our own students and have used ourselves to perfect the seat in the canter. Again, we will share, how you can USE the seat to shape and develop the quality of the horse's canter.

WE THINK YOU WILL LOVE THIS COURSE...

WHAT EVERYONE IS SAYING ABOUT US

Placeholder Image
Hi, I wanted to share a big change. The first time I posted video of my canter I was frustrated and didn't catch the up and forward movement. Today I finally got it. I felt the movement and the horse took a nice shape. Thanks for lessons and all supportive comments .

- MARTA
Lightbulb moment today....not in canter - yet! but in walk and trot, whilst hacking today me and my friend were taking about the content and she reminded me of the visual of the band from the reins right around your pelvis - well.....it was brilliant, I had to think hard about keeping my elbows by my side, my shoulders back, to create the frame and allow my young mare to move forward into the contact...so that the ‘give’ came from my pelvis, rather than my arms, it was like a light just switched on for her and for me, like we were moving as one, I felt both secure and connected....yipee!
Thank you.

Until I found Thomas and Shana my ethos towards training my horses was a very lonely place. Now I feel I’m in a community that “gets it” and that gives me strength and confidence.

Yes!!! I had the same light bulb moment this week… I think it was the first time I’d been tuned into a true connection and became very clear about riding back to front, My horse went the best he has gone for me.

- JULIA

Yes I’d say this is the one image that has helped me the most. Not only does my body feel more connected to the horse, it feels more connected to ITSELF if that makes sense. I used to think What are my arms doing, what are my hips doing etc. now they feel like one entity (when I get it right πŸ˜†)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Placeholder Image
Will this course work for me?
This course is suitable for you:
- whether you are a novice, professional trainer, or instructor teaching others.
- whether you are a dressage rider, a jumper, a western rider, or anything else in between.
- whether you are new to dressage or been a student of dressage for years.
- whether you have taken every online course out there, or have never taken even one.
- regardless of the breed or kind of horse you ride.
- regardless of the kind of tack you use, or whether you use no tack at all
- whether you are ambitious or want to take your time and work through the materials slowly

What level is this course appropriate for?
This course is intended to be for all levels. It is never too early to build good habits.

I can’t ride right now because of weather/lockdown/health… can I still benefit from this course?
Yes, in fact, we are building this course with YOU in mind. Whether because of the current circumstances or the myriad of things that come up in life, it is inevitable that sometimes things get in the way of our riding. But this should not prevent your ability to make progress. Every lesson in this course can be practiced off of the horse and implemented later when you can ride again. ALSO, you have lifetime access, so you can do the course at whatever pace suits you, and you can return to it whenever you want, as often as you want.

What type of tack / equipment do I need? What do I need to attend the sessions?
No special tack is required. You will need a computer or similar device and internet connection to access the materials. You will need a little bit of floor space where you can sit/lie down to do the Feldenkrais exercises (no other equipment is required). A horse is optional, although recommended. Facebook access is optional, although also recommended. Live sessions will be held through Zoom. Zoom is a free software you can download (we provide instructions). Otherwise, you can watch the recordings afterwards in the course platform.

“Rider Makeover is a more structured course that examines physical rider issues in turn. It offers discussions about and potential solutions to typical problems that our bodies give us. It will also compliment your work in the C&C course. Unless you are already at total capacity in term of your listening time! In which case, be gentle with yourself and remember there is always next year.”

“The Rider makeover is very good for reviewing yourself as rider. (Did the first course) You get to fix seat issues you've not really even realized you hadπŸ˜… I've got very sore bunions for years, and in this course I found the reasonπŸ’•. I found a right way to walk and correct my seat in the saddle for not irritating my bunions. This summer I've been able to walk without correctors on my toes and riding does not any more cause pain on my feetπŸ’ͺ”

“This was "THE COURSE" who let fall all the pieces in their places. I discovered what was going wrong with my Seat and why I didn’t advance. And even my horse was unhappy. Thanks to Thomas Ritter , Shana Ritter and Catherine McCrum I could figure out where I had to change my riding and adapt my seat so it was comfortable from my horse and me. Really happy the course start again.
I am sure that the majority of the riders underestimate the influence from the rider on the horse. I think everybody can recognize one or more themes that you talk about and make improvement with the solutions and suggestion this course offers. I also want to mention Charlotte, who is maybe a bit more in the background but who always give good comments who are for sure based on a lot of experience. The Facebook group is also a great place where you can share your experiences and often recognize your own struggles and often find suggestions from other people, who help you further.”

We have thousands of students all over the world whom we have helped to become better riders and trainers. They not only have surpassed their perceived limits but they had done so while owning their process and autonomy. We don’t just tell you what to do and expect you to do it blindly (whether it makes sense to you or not, and whether it actually works for you or not). We empower you with the knowledge and confidence to own and control your own learning process. We want you to become your own trainer for yourself!

Better yet, these techniques are HOLISTIC. They will help you to be healhier on AND off the horse, and they will help you develop into a more well-rounded happier rider.
