You can tell a lot about the training of a horse by looking at his muscle development.

(particularly his topline).

- whether he is using himself correctly or incorrectly

- whether he is moving in a healthy balance or in imbalance

- whether he is developing in a good direction or declining

When horses are moving in a healthy balance, their musculature will reflect that.

The horse becomes more beautiful.

Correct training makes the horse more beautiful from month to month and from year to year. If a horse becomes uglier over time, something is wrong with the training.

“Xenophon was the first one to claim that horses can become only more beautiful with correct training, never uglier. I would like to add to this that if the horse becomes uglier in the course of his work, it is the unmistakable proof of incorrect dressage training.” -  Alois Podhajsky (1965, translation: TR).

The muscling shows you whether the horse is moving in a healthy way or whether he has unhealthy movement patterns which can lead to lameness due to tendon injuries, arthritis, kissing spines, etc.

Good movement is healthy movement.

Healthy movement leads to a good topline.

Good Movement

The horse’s movement is healthy when it is balanced and supple so that the energy of the hind legs can flow through the entire body without being interrupted by blockages, energy leaks, or friction in the body. Correct is healthy.

Good Topline

A well-muscled topline appears round and smooth, accentuating the best of a horse’s natural conformation. It reflects correct use of the muscles which is based upon correct movement patterns of the body.

The first place to begin is on the ground.

It is easier for the horse to figure out his balance if he only has to deal with his own body. Balancing the rider on top of himself raises the center of gravity and makes the task much more difficult for the horse. Furthermore, gravity has the effect of pressing the horse’s back to the ground when you have the rider’s weight in the saddle. It is easier for the horse to learn to lift his back and use it correctly when there is no additional weight on his back.

With groundwork you can:

Improve the horse’s body awareness

Improve the horse’s balance

Improve the horse’s coordination

Build the back muscles more easily when there is no weight pressing down

SEE how the horse is using his whole body together (see how he moves, see how the body parts interact with each other)

Explain new movement patterns better to the horse

Groundwork is also really good to get to know the horse and build a relationship, or improve the relationship with a horse you already know. The bond becomes closer when you do groundwork.

Wait... I should tell you a bit about us before we go any further. We are Thomas and Shana Ritter.

We now live in Portugal having moved here right before the Lockdowns began. Thomas is an International Dressage Clinician, teaching all over Europe, the United States, and Canada. Shana is an FEI competitor, USDF Silver Medalist,  and developer of the Artistic Dressage Online Course Program.
In 2018 we started collaborating with Catherine McCrum who is a Feldenkrais Practitioner based in London to introduce Feldenkrais concepts for riders in our courses (with amazing success!), but meanwhile behind-the-scenes we have been exploring together how we could apply these concepts to the horses. If they help the riders this much, why not do the same for the horses?
In Spring of 2020 we had the opportunity to put it all to good work with an assortment of new (to us) horses with various issues but most of them with one thing in common: poor topline musculature.  They had sunken backs, deteriorated muscling along their backs, bulging undernecks, and poor body awareness. We put the horses on a topline rehabilitation program involving Longeing, Double-Longeing, Work-in-Hand, and Long Reining. We started implementing Catherine's Feldenkrais techniques (which we are calling "FeldenHorse") with the horses to improve their body awareness, suppleness, connection, and stability.

The results have been extraordinary.

Thomas wrote about his complete system in his first book, "Dressage Principles based on Biomechanics" (Cadmos Publishing, 2010)

in which he outlined the Universal Basic Principles of Biomechanics combined with classical riding theory as it applies to the individual application to each individual horse.

But his specialty has always been the work on the ground, particularly Long Reining

and he then wrote about the training of the horse at the Long Rein in his second book, "Long Reining: From the Beginning through the Levade" (Cadmos Publishing, 2014).

But until now we have not taught any of this information in an online course. Until NOW.

✦ The Topline Makeover ✦

A 12-week 16+ week program that gives you the understanding and techniques you need to sculpt, rebuild, and repair your horse’s topline ALL COMPLETELY FROM THE GROUND. This non-riding course introduces you to using longeing, double-longeing, work-in-hand, and long reining to systematically build the horse’s movement patterns which support and rebuild a healthy topline. In addition, this course introduces a new concept called FeldenHorse developed by Catherine McCrum which are Feldenkrais-based lessons you do with your horse on the ground.

Perfect for any horse whose topline needs some TLC:
- Rehab horses who need to rebuild slowly and carefully,
- Horses who have been out of work for awhile,
- Young horses who need to build strength before training under saddle,
- Horses who show signs of topline degradation,
- Re-training horses (horses being retrained after bad training),
- Horses making a career change,
- Horses who cannot be ridden for some reason (or rider can’t ride for some reason),
- Older horses who need some extra help to stay strong and health.

Or ANYONE who wants to learn to use groundwork to correctly develop their horse's musculature, using Longeing, Double-Longeing, Work-in-Hand, Long Reining, and our "FeldenHorse" lessons.

The Topline Makeover Course is an ongoing BETA course which means we are in the process of creating the course content NOW. We began releasing the content on Monday, September 28, 2020, but we are still working on the producing the final modules. When you enroll now you get instant access to the first several modules and can pick up there and follow along as we progress further.

By the end of this program, you’ll learn:

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR EQUIPMENT

You will learn what equipment we most recommend for this kind of work and how to choose what is right for your horse (including choice of cavessons, longe lines, double longeing lines, long reins, and whips).

LONGEING WITH A CAVESSON

No other equipment required for longeing than a cavesson, longe line, and some sort of longe whip. We will teach you what you need to be looking for and tips for helping the horse use his topline in a healthy way with longeing.

WORK-IN-HAND

You will learn how to introduce the Portuguese method of work-in-hand to your horse (meaning you hold the reins in your hands and there are no side reins or other auxilary reins used) to help your horse gain better responsiveness, body awareness, coordination, and to use himself correctly.

TOPLINE DEVELOPMENT THEORY

Your education would not possibly be complete without a thorough understanding of how the horse develops the topline musculature, using biomechanics and based upon classical principles. You will learn what gymnastic components are involved in developing the topline and how the horse needs to develop these components.

MINDSET AND FRAME OF MIND

This type of work requires a certain mindset in order to create the calm, quiet, safe atmosphere that is most conducive towards learning for your horse.

DOUBLE-LONGEING

You will learn about the different options you have regarding how to setup the equipment and hold the reins, and you will learn when and why to use each specific configuration.

ASSESSING YOUR HORSE

You will learn how to assess your horse's development daily and over time, by analyzing his sweat patterns and muscle changes over time. This helps you determine when you are correctly targeting the right muscle groups and when you need to change your approach to become more effective.

LONG REINING

You will learn how to use long reining to infuse more creative movement patterns into your horse's gymnastic program. You will learn how to begin the long reining and simple exercises you can do to access specific muscle groups.

MIXING THE TECHNIQUES

You will learn when it is appropriate (and how to) mix up the different methods and move between double-longeing, work-in-hand, long-reining, and standard longeing.

FELDENKRAIS FOR HORSES

Through the use of Catherine McCrum's FeldenHorse lessons, you will learn how to tune in to your horse, and help him tune into you. You will learn lessons you can use with your horse to help him soften wherever he braces in his body, get more comfortable and familiar with shifting his weight from side to side, and gain more stability over his four legs.

This is a "Beta" course which means...

This course has never been offered before, and in fact, you are going to become one of the very first members of this brand-new course. This is very exciting in and of itself, but equally exciting is that, as a beta course founding member, you have an influence over the outcome of the course. We are creating the course content each week as we move through the program. This gives us the flexibility to respond to requests and questions we get from you, and incorporate this into the course curriculum. In other words, this course interacts with YOU. It changes as a result of your participation in it! You will help it become the best course possible through your participation, asking your questions, trying the lessons and exercises, and sharing your results.

Because of that, we offer this course this first time at a lower price than its true value. And never again will this course be offered at this price.

It also means that you will not only get to take this course now, but you will receive automatic enrollment in the course when it is offered next time, as well. Two times for the price of one!

This is a complete online course with support, feedback, and community. Lifetime access.

Step-by-step program

videos with us demonstrating all of this ourselves (watch online or download)

WHAT'S INCLUDED

THEORY

The theory of the gymnastic components of the topline, how all of the parts of the horse and of the training work together as a composite whole, mindset, and body awarenss.  Each theory lesson builds upon the previous module, but they can also be used as a reference library.

INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS

Each module has several biomechanically-based gymnastic horse exercises which correspond to the theory instruction, so you are are able to immediately apply the theoretical lessons into your training, and experience first-hand how they work. Each exercise comes with a PDF with complete instructions outlining what to do, why to do it, and how to do it.

DEMO VIDEOS

We will be demonstrating all of the methods and exercises ourselves, with footage of us working with our own horses and horses we are working with. We will explain what is working, what is not, and why so that you not only educate your understanding, you also educate your eye.

FACEBOOK GROUP

One of the most thrilling parts of this course is the incredible community. As a member of the course, you are granted lifetime access to the community with it's ongoing discussions, progress reports, and questions answered by Thomas, Shana, and their team of assistant instructors.

You can post your videos in the group for feedback and advice.

LIVE Q&A SESSIONS

Get your questions answered live. You can ask your questions at any time in the Facebook Group but there is just nothing like getting your questions answered live. You will get access to all of the upcoming Q&A sessions, not only for the duration of this course but also for future sessions of the course. That equates to lifetime support. It can’t get better than that!

LIFETIME ACCESS

You never lose access to your course materials, as long as we are alive and able to support the course platform (and we hope that is a very, very long time). That means that you can work as fast or as slow through the materials as you wish. That means that if you get sick, tired, injured  - you can pause at anytime and come back to it whenever you and your horse are ready for more. It will always be there for you, and so will we. In addition, you will always receive the newest version of the course, automatically.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We know you have a busy life, you need time to actually go to the barn and ride your horse so you can implement what you are learning, and you don’t want to spend ALL of your time sitting in front of a computer watching videos every week. Each module should take you no more than, on average, only 1-2 hours per week to go through. In addition, there are bi-weekly Q&As which each run 1-2 hours long. Of course, we cannot predict the amount of time you spend in the Facebook Group because that is entirely dependant upon how much time you enjoy interacting with the other riders in there.

This course is suitable for any rider, regardless of discipline, who has an open mind and is eager to learn new things. Some of the techniques, if you have never done them before, will make you initially feel awkward, but stick with it, because that quickly fades as you develop more competence.

This course is designed to be especially useful for horses who have been laid off or out of work for awhile, younger horses (not under the age of four, please), older horses, rehab horses, and horses undergoing a career change (ex-broodmares, etc.).

But that does NOT mean this course is not suitable for fit, healthy, dressage horses. It will benefit EVERY horse in many ways.

Honestly, how soon you see results will depend upon how soon you start going through the course materials and implementing it. In our own horses, we start seeing changes to the horse's posture almost immediately, but changes to the musculature take time. It will, of course, depend upon your starting point. We highly recommend that you take "before" photos of your horse before beginning any of the work because it can be really exciting to compare these to your "after" photos at the end of the course.

Then you are in the right place! We are going to give you an introduction to each of the covered types of groundwork so you can get started and find out what works for your horse, what you enjoy doing, and what gives you the best results for your situation.

Not a problem. Some horses have had bad prior experiences with longeing and we get that. We will give you some alternative methods to try, so that you can experiment if you feel like this might help. Otherwise, skip the longeing parts and just do the other parts.

First of all, we highly recommend that you talk to your vet about why this is the case. Sometimes, there is a solid reason. Sometimes, however, some vets have only seen bad longeing and they have a very negative impression of its impact on the horse. You can understand why they would come to this conclusion! This is not the typical "run them around in circles and stress their legs" kind of longeing. Discuss this with your vet so the two of you can together come up with a decision that is best for your horse.

If you still find that you can not do longeing with your horse, it isn't a problem. Skip the longeing parts of the course and do the other parts. You will still get so much out of it, and so will your horse!

You need a horse (of course), and a relatively level work space such as an arena or paddock area to work in. In Module 1, we will be providing a full list of our recommended equipment, but a quick summary of that would include: cavesson, 2 longe lines, circingle, bridle, reins, longe whip, and a shorter work-in-hand or riding whip.

Also helpful: a smartphone/video camera/robotic camera to record video of your horse. You will also need an internet connection and a computer/tablet/smartphone with which to access the course materials, zoom sessions, and Facebook Group. The Facebook Group is optional. Zoom software is free and can be downloaded at zoom.us .

Not a problem. All sessions are always recorded and the recordings are uploaded to the Q&A archives within 24-48 hours after the session is over. Every recording is available in downloadable video and audio format so you can watch or listen, whenever, and wherever you prefer.

As of Feb 2, 2021, Modules 1-9 have been released (some parts of these modules are still in production). Each subsequent module will be released thereafter. This is a beta course, and there may be some flexibility with some of the contents in the module as we produce the materials as-needed.

You can take as much time as you need to go through each module. You have lifetime access to the materials, all course upgrades, and the Facebook Group, so you can work through it all at the pace that best suits you and your horse. You can come back to it at any time, you can start over at any time, and you can pick up wherever you left off whenever you like.

Every single video, audio file, every exercise PDF, diagram, checklist… EVERYTHING is completely downloadable and yours to keep forever.

This is unlike any of our other courses. We have no other groundwork program, and this is the first time we are including any FeldenHorse lessons in a course!

If and when you have questions or problems, come to the Facebook Group and post your issue. Include video, if possible. You can alternatively ask in the Live Q&A sessions. It is additionally possbible to add on a VIP video coaching add-on during the payment process.

You will gain membership in a prosperous and enthusiastic private Facebook Group. Right now we have no live in-person events scheduled, but it is something we would like to include at some point in the future. Of course, you would be notified of any future events, when they become reality.

No. This is a brand new beta course and we are creating the content as we go.

Yes, absolutely. It isn’t necessary to have a home instructor, but it can be an advantage if you do. We have many members who have regular riding instructors and take lessons, some regularly and others more periodically. In any case, the regular lessons are an advantage because you can get feedback from your instructor on how you are implementing the lessons learned in the course. In most cases, the members in our courses have reported back to us that their instructor helps them go over the course materials and helps coach them through the riding exercises. In several cases, we have then had those instructors join our courses, too, and they work through the materials with all of their students.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, how advantageous that you have the option to learn this way when you have no access to local instruction. You can fall back on the live Q&A coaching sessions and the Facebook community for camaraderie, support, and feedback in the absence of a local instructor.

No other program teaches our framework, our system, our methods, and our exercises. And no other program has the support of Thomas, Shana, and Catherine to give you pinpointed answers to your questions.

Yes! In fact, you won’t be the only one. We have a growing community of non-traditional horses and riders in our courses. It is a melting pot where everyone finds common ground through the love of the horses, the passion for learning, and the ability to apply the principles and exercises regardless of the breed of the horse, background of horse or rider, or the preferred equipment to use.

Family members in the same household can share an account and individual access to the Facebook Group. Just email us at [email protected] to get their FB Group access approved.

You can access everything with an internet browser, however there is a free app for the course content which enables you to easily navigate the course materials on your mobile device. You may also wish to download the free Zoom app to access the Q&A sessions. We give complete instructions inside the course platform.

Perhaps it will be even better than you expect! But nevertheless, if you are unhappy with it for any reason, we have a 14-day full money back guarantee.

We cannot guarantee success. That is up to you. There is no quick-fix method to anything. You still have to show up, be willing to try new things, and implement what you learn. But knowledge is power and the more access you have to knowledge and tools that WORK, the more you increase your chances of success. As far as satisfaction with the course, we have a 14-day money back guarantee. Try it and see if you like it for 14 days before making your final decision.

Yes, many! We have many riders all over the world who have been able to train their horses, even to FEI, through just our courses and/or video coaching. However, this particular course is brand new so we have no testimonials to share with you. We hope that you will be sharing yours with us at the end of this course!

We have, however, been using the exact methods in this course to rehabilitate a number of horses we are currently working with. We can vouch for its effectiveness!

You can do this course however it suits you. You do not need to join the Facebook Group if you prefer not to be on Facebook, but you are welcome to do so. You do not need to participate in the live Q&As, but you are welcome to do so. You do not need to post video of yourself for feedback, but you are welcome to do so. Of course, the more involved you are, the more you will benefit - but it is totally up to you!

Just email us at [email protected]  . It is also possible to pay by bank transfer within the EU. Just email!

Click the button below. Select your payment plan and currency preference. You can pay in full, or select a payment schedule. Then enter your details and payment info. You will receive an email with your login information and a link to the course platform where you will find further instructions. You will also then receive instructions on how to join the Facebook Group and the live Q&A sessions.

Yes! This has just been added to all of our courses this year (thank you Team member, Dawn!). All of the course course content has closed captioning as an option on all of the videos.

We don’t know yet. Both of these depend on how much we want to change before re-releasing the course. Usually when we re-release a beta course, the price is at least doubled for the finished course.

We cannot suspend your payments to begin later, but you can join the course partway through, if you like. However, keep in mind this means you will miss the Q&A sessions that have already happened, and you will be technically “behind” the other course participants.

Within the EU you can pay via bank transfer. Just email [email protected]  to set it up.
