- whether he is using himself correctly or incorrectly
- whether he is moving in a healthy balance or in imbalance
- whether he is developing in a good direction or declining
- whether your riding or training is helping or hindering the horse
The horse’s movement is healthy when it is balanced and supple so that the energy of the hind legs can flow through the entire body without being interrupted by blockages, energy leaks, or friction in the body. Correct is healthy.
A well-muscled topline appears round and smooth, accentuating the best of a horse’s natural conformation. It reflects correct use of the muscles which is based upon correct movement patterns of the body.
It is easier for the horse to figure out his balance if he only has to deal with his own body. Balancing the rider on top of himself raises the center of gravity and makes the task much more difficult for the horse. Furthermore, gravity has the effect of pressing the horse’s back to the ground when you have the rider’s weight in the saddle. It is easier for the horse to learn to lift his back and use it correctly when there is no additional weight on his back.
Groundwork is also really good to get to know the horse and build a relationship, or improve the relationship with a horse you already know. The bond becomes closer when you do groundwork.
He identified the Universal Basic Principles of Biomechanics combined with classical riding theory as it applies to the individual application to each individual horse.
and he then wrote about the training of the horse at the Long Rein in his second book, "Long Reining: From the Beginning through the Levade" (Cadmos Publishing, 2014).
This course is perfect for:-
- Any horse whose topline needs some TLC
- Rehab horses who need to rebuild slowly and carefully,
- Horses who have been out of work for a while,
- Young horses who need to build strength before training under saddle,
- Horses who show signs of topline degradation,
- Re-training horses (horses being retrained after bad training),
- Horses making a career change,
- Horses who cannot be ridden for some reason (or rider can’t ride for some reason),
- Older horses who need some extra help to stay strong and healthy.
You will learn what equipment we most recommend for this kind of work and how to choose what is right for your horse (including choice of cavessons, longe lines, double longeing lines, long reins, and whips).
No other equipment required for longeing than a cavesson, longe line, and some sort of longe whip. We will teach you what you need to be looking for and tips for helping the horse use his topline in a healthy way with longeing.
You will learn how to introduce the Portuguese method of work-in-hand to your horse (meaning you hold the reins in your hands and there are no side reins or other auxilary reins used) to help your horse gain better responsiveness, body awareness, coordination, and to use himself correctly.
Your education would not possibly be complete without a thorough understanding of how the horse develops the topline musculature, using biomechanics and based upon classical principles. You will learn what gymnastic components are involved in developing the topline and how the horse needs to develop these components.
This type of work requires a certain mindset in order to create the calm, quiet, safe atmosphere that is most conducive towards learning for your horse.
You will learn about the different options you have regarding how to setup the equipment and hold the reins, and you will learn when and why to use each specific configuration.
You will learn how to assess your horse's development daily and over time, by analyzing his sweat patterns and muscle changes over time. This helps you determine when you are correctly targeting the right muscle groups and when you need to change your approach to become more effective.
You will learn how to use long reining to infuse more creative movement patterns into your horse's gymnastic program. You will learn how to begin the long reining and simple exercises you can do to access specific muscle groups.
You will learn when it is appropriate (and how to) mix up the different methods and move between double-longeing, work-in-hand, long-reining, and standard longeing.
Through the use of Catherine McCrum's FeldenHorse lessons, you will learn how to tune in to your horse, and help him tune into you. You will learn lessons you can use with your horse to help him soften wherever he braces in his body, get more comfortable and familiar with shifting his weight from side to side, and gain more stability over his four legs.
- Is it lack of awareness about what the topline even reveals about the horse’s unhealthy movement patterns
- Is it lack of realization that these unhealthy movement patterns play a long-term role in setting your horse up for unsoundness in the future (not to mention resistance and discomfort along the way)
- Is it lack of knowledge about how to address these deficiencies (What muscles do what? And what can you do to develop them more correctly?)
- Is it lack of skills, know-how, and techniques. These are things you need to be taught to do correctly.
- Is it lack of support and feedback, someone who can answer your questions and help show you what to do when you get “stuck”?

"The best part for me in the Topline Makeover Course was putting it all together and patiently explaining to us how to identify issues, select the right exercises from the ground to help, and then gauge if you were making progress. Something about having the whole picture-- the conformation, the muscles, the skeletal structure, the biomechanics... the movement patterns, the habits, and the consideration for current or past injuries--helped me actually learn a way to look at a topline and think what the horse was doing or not doing to maintain THAT shape, imagine a more effective shape for the horse I have, and then do something about it. I felt like there was something for everyone, no matter your skill level or the conformation (or age) of your horse. Bonus were the horse videos, the patience, the empathy, the positive focus on making improvements, the encouragement that was always realistic and never false and the wonderful Ritter community who were along for the brisk walk down the long side for collected trot in hand."
- Jennifer Morris
The theory of the gymnastic components of the topline, how all of the parts of the horse and of the training work together as a composite whole, mindset, and body awarenss. Each theory lesson builds upon the previous module, but they can also be used as a reference library.
Each module has several biomechanically-based gymnastic horse exercises which correspond to the theory instruction, so you are are able to immediately apply the theoretical lessons into your training, and experience first-hand how they work. Each exercise comes with a PDF with complete instructions outlining what to do, why to do it, and how to do it.
We demonstrate the methods and exercises ourselves, with footage of us working with our own horses and horses we are working with. We explain what is working, what is not, and why so that you not only educate your understanding, you also educate your eye.
You never lose access to your course materials, as long as we are alive and able to support the course platform (and we hope that is a very, very long time). That means that you can work as fast or as slow through the materials as you wish. That means that if you get sick, tired, injured - you can pause at anytime and come back to it whenever you and your horse are ready for more. It will always be there for you.

FeldenHorse Theory Masterclass In this pre-recorded Masterclass, Catherine McCrum introduced the FeldenHorse philosophy and process. Thomas and Catherine will discuss the origins of this new method and how it has been developed as well as our observations on our own horses.
Hunter’s Bump Rehabilitation Masterclass (value €150) This is a very special recording of a Masterclass with Noor Tanger from the Netherlands on Noor and her partner Pat work with many rehabilitation horses in the Netherlands. In her work, Noor combines correct dressage schooling with a variety of bodywork modalities to help support the horses they work with. In their work, they have often had to help horses recover from the Hunter’s Bump. In this Masterclass, Noor shares with you HOW she does this Physiotherapy for the Hunter’s Bump. It includes an interview, demonstration, and recorded Q&A. If you have a horse who struggles with this often painful affliction, you will find this very helpful.
Masterclass: “Double-Longeing” with Thomas Ritter Masterclass recording (value €150) A recording of a special bonus masterclass from our Exercise of the Month Club held in July 2019. In this masterclass, Thomas introduces what double-longeing can be used for, what equipment to use, how to set it up in various ways (and why), and how you can use it to help balance the horse better and improve the way the horse uses his body.
Masterclass: “Work-in-Hand for Rehabilitation” with Noor Tanger and Patrick Molenaar Masterclass recording (value € 29.99) A recording of a special conversation we had in May 2019 with Noor Tanger and Patrick Molenaar who specialise in the rehabilitation of unsound horses through various methods. In this masterclass, we discussed how they use work-in-hand to help rehabilitate the horse.
Masterclass: “Longeing for Rehabilitation” with Patrick Molenaar Masterclass recording (value €29.99) A recording of a special conversation we had in March 2019 with Patrick Molenaar who specialises in the rehabilitation of unsound horses through various methods. In this masterclass, we discussed how he uses longeing and double-longing to rehabilitate the horse.
Masterclass: “Bodywork and Intuition” with Noor Tanger Masterclass recording (value €29.99) A recording of a special conversation we had in April 2019 with Noor Tanger who specialises in the rehabilitation of unsound horses through various methods. In this masterclass, we discussed how she uses a combination of her intuition and Masterson-inspired bodywork to help rehabilitate the horse.
Masterclass: “The Role of Tempo and Speed on the Horse’s Soundness” with Thomas Ritter Masterclass recording (value €29.99) A recording of a special masterclass from April 2019. In this masterclass, Thomas discusses the important role and considerations you must keep in mind regarding tempo and speed when training your horse in regards to keeping your horse sound and restoring soundness to a lame horse.
Masterclass: “Points to consider when rehabilitating an unsound or injured horse” with Thomas Ritter Masterclass recording (value €29.99) A recording of a special masterclass from April 2019. In this masterclass, Thomas discusses the important considerations you must keep in mind when rehabilitating an unsound or injured horse.
Masterclass: “Piaffe Training on a Continuum” with Thomas Ritter Masterclass recording (value €39) In this masterclass from May 2022, Thomas discusses the process and strategy of piaffe training and how it starts with focusing on building a foundation of solid basics, practised with the focus on quality.
Masterclass with Yvonne Lübcke on “Energetic Grooming” recording (value €39) Assistant Ritter Trainer, Yvonne Lübcke, will share her special technique of grooming which helps to balance the horse’s energies. Includes recorded Q&A session.
Masterclass with Thomas Ritter and Catherine McCrum on “What is “Good Movement”: A Framework of Observation” recording (value €39) In this Masterclass from inside our Ritterize Membership in February 2022, we discuss how you can use a framework of observation to help you determine what is good movement, for both yourself and for your horse.
Masterclass with Thomas Ritter and Yvonne Lübcke on “Quality over Quantity” recording (value €39) In this Masterclass from inside our Ritterize Membership in April 2022, we discussed where the true value of the work comes from focusing on the quality of the movement, rather than the quantity of the work (the number of minutes/hours/days of work, or the number of times you do any specific exercise). It is a reminder to focus on what really matters in the work we do with our horses so that it will help them in the most beneficial way.

If you’re scratching your head about the term, “FeldenHorse,” don’t feel bad. This is a totally innovative new Bodywork method developed by Feldenkrais Practitioner, Catherine McCrum. It is no wonder you haven’t heard about it yet, because you cannot find it ANYWHERE else. This is a proprietary method developed just for the Ritter Dressage and you are going to get EXCLUSIVE access as a course member.
But to learn more about it, check out this bonus training we did with Catherine McCrum to discuss the incredible benefits of this work. Watch the entire session right here:
We know you have a busy life, you need time to actually go to the barn and ride your horse so you can implement what you are learning, and you don’t want to spend ALL of your time sitting in front of a computer watching videos every week. Each module should take you no more than, on average, only 1-2 hours per week to go through.
Then you can spend as much time as you like working on the exercises and techniques with your horse.
This course is suitable for any rider, regardless of discipline, who has an open mind and is eager to learn new things. Some of the techniques, if you have never done them before, will make you initially feel awkward, but stick with it, because that quickly fades as you develop more competence.
This course is designed to be especially useful for horses who have been laid off or out of work for awhile, younger horses (not under the age of four, please), older horses, rehab horses, and horses undergoing a career change (ex-broodmares, etc.).
But that does NOT mean this course is not suitable for fit, healthy, dressage horses. It will benefit EVERY horse in many ways.
Then you are in the right place! We are going to give you an introduction to each of the covered types of groundwork so you can get started and find out what works for your horse, what you enjoy doing, and what gives you the best results for your situation.
Not a problem. Some horses have had bad prior experiences with longeing and we get that. We will give you some alternative methods to try, so that you can experiment if you feel like this might help. Otherwise, skip the longeing parts and just do the other parts.
First of all, we highly recommend that you talk to your vet about why this is the case. Sometimes, there is a solid reason. Sometimes, however, some vets have only seen bad longeing and they have a very negative impression of its impact on the horse. You can understand why they would come to this conclusion! This is not the typical "run them around in circles and stress their legs" kind of longeing. Discuss this with your vet so the two of you can together come up with a decision that is best for your horse.
If you still find that you can not do longeing with your horse, it isn't a problem. Skip the longeing parts of the course and do the other parts. You will still get so much out of it, and so will your horse!
You need a horse (of course), and a relatively level work space such as an arena or paddock area to work in. In Module 1, we will be providing a full list of our recommended equipment, but a quick summary of that would include: cavesson, 2 longe lines, circingle, bridle, reins, longe whip, and a shorter work-in-hand or riding whip.
Also helpful: a smartphone/video camera/robotic camera to record video of your horse. You will also need an internet connection and a computer/tablet/smartphone with which to access the course materials, zoom sessions, and Facebook Group. The Facebook Group is optional. Zoom software is free and can be downloaded at zoom.us .
Honestly, how soon you see results will depend upon how soon you start going through the course materials and implementing it. In our own horses, we start seeing changes to the horse's posture almost immediately, but changes to the musculature take time. It will, of course, depend upon your starting point. We highly recommend that you take "before" photos of your horse before beginning any of the work because it can be really exciting to compare these to your "after" photos at the end of the course.
Yes, absolutely. In fact, how advantageous that you have the option to learn this way when you have no access to local instruction. You can fall back on the Facebook community for camaraderie, support, and feedback in the absence of a local instructor.
You can take as much time as you need to go through each module. You have lifetime access to the materials, so you can work through it all at the pace that best suits you and your horse. You can come back to it at any time, you can start over at any time, and you can pick up wherever you left off whenever you like.
Every single video, audio file, every exercise PDF, diagram, checklist… EVERYTHING is completely downloadable and yours to keep forever.
This is unlike any of our other courses. We have no other groundwork-exclusive program, and this is the only course that contains a strong FeldenHorse Bodywork approach to supplement the groundwork training.
If you have questions or problems, come to the Facebook Group and post your issue.
You will gain membership to a private Facebook Group.
This is a Self-Study Course and all of the materials are available immediately.
Yes, absolutely. It isn’t necessary to have a home instructor, but it can be an advantage if you do. We have many members who have regular riding instructors and take lessons, some regularly and others more periodically.
Regular lessons can be an advantage, as you can get feedback from your instructor on how you are implementing the lessons learned in the course.
In most cases, the members in our courses have reported that their instructor is open to helping them go over the course materials.
No other program teaches our framework, our system, our methods, and our exercises.
Yes! In fact, you won’t be the only one. We have a growing community of non-traditional horses and riders in our courses. It is a melting pot where everyone finds common ground through the love of the horses, the passion for learning, and the ability to apply the principles and exercises regardless of the breed of the horse, background of horse or rider, or the preferred equipment to use.
Family members in the same household can share an account and individual access to the Facebook Group. Just email us at [email protected] to get their FB Group access approved.
You can access everything with an internet browser, however there is a free app for the course content which enables you to easily navigate the course materials on your mobile device.
Perhaps it will be even better than you expect! But nevertheless, if you are unhappy with it for any reason, we have a 14-day full money back guarantee.
We cannot guarantee success. That is up to you. There is no quick-fix method to anything. You still have to show up, be willing to try new things, and implement what you learn. But knowledge is power and the more access you have to knowledge and tools that WORK, the more you increase your chances of success. As far as satisfaction with the course, we have a 14-day money back guarantee. Try it and see if you like it for 14 days before making your final decision.
Yes, many! These are the exact methods we have used ourselves to rehabilitate a number of horses we recently acquired after we moved to Portugal. We can vouch for its effectiveness! We have many riders all over the world who have been able to train their horses, even to FEI, through just our courses and/or video coaching.
