A “Simple Change” in Dressage is a change of the canter from one lead to the other, through the walk (Canter-Walk-Canter). For example, from the left lead canter, the horse would be brought directly to the walk for 3-5 clear walk steps, and the other canter lead begins. There should be no trot steps between canter and walk and from walk to canter.
✔ It is a good test of the horse’s responsiveness and ability to adjust quickly to the rider’s requests.
✔ If you wish to compete, the simple change is required at USDF Second Level and British Dressage Elementary Level.
✔ Good quality Simple Changes are considered a prerequisite to good quality Flying Changes. Once you have the simple changes, you can begin work on the Flying Changes.
✔ Many of the problems in the Flying Changes can be fixed by returning to polish the Simple Changes.
✔ This course is the perfect preparation for our Flying Changes course. The next session of the Flying Changes course starts on February 13, 2026 - right when this Simple Changes Workshop ends. You'll be perfectly prepped, if that is how you wish to continue in your training.
Before you can work on the Simple Change movement as a "whole", you need to first take it apart into its core components. By working on each of those components first, you can then build it up from the foundation. By polishing each component individually, you can then bring it all together in the end for a much better result than if you tried to just "wing it".
🌱 All Online. No travel is necessary. You just need an internet connection and device to access the internet (also a phone or video camera to record your rides, IF you want feedback on your videos).
🌱 4 modules, delivered one per week
🌱 Each module contains theory and 3 riding exercises, with videos and text instructions (all downloadable). Each module will contains video demonstrations of Thomas, our Assistant Trainers, and course Alumni riding the exercises with Thomas' commentary about what is happening, why, and how.
🌱 Hotseats Feedback!!! You can get feedback on your videos of yourself riding each exercise, each component of the simple change, and the final movement put together with our detailed analysis, tips, and instruction. You can get our feedback in the Hot Seat sessions where we meet live on Zoom as a group, watch the videos, and give you our commentary feedback. Or, if you need even more feedback, or you just prefer to do it this way: you can post your videos in the Facebook Group to get commentary, feedback, and advice on what to do.
🌱 You can attend the 4 live Q&A sessions where you can ask any questions you have, so you are fully supported throughout the entire course experience.
🌱 After the course is over, you keep access to all of the course materials, videos, recordings, and the Facebook Group. You can return to the materials and work on them more, on your own, at any time, as many times as you like.
