Aware Rider 2024

 Join us for Aware Rider 2024, for a unique exploration into what it means to be in relationship with our horses, ourselves, and the training process.

If you feel that there’s more to riding than just the “riding” part? Perhaps you have gotten glimpses of an inner world that you could explore within yourself and with your horse, and felt that within that space there is so much you could learn about yourself and develop within your relationship with your horse?

 

This is what the course covers:

Week 1 - Developing a Mutually Enjoyable Partnership with your Horse

There are few things more enjoyable than seeing your horse lift his or her head in the distance, recognise that it’s you, and come over to greet you. In Week 1 we will discuss how to become the person your horse most loves to be with and consider what might go wrong when our human attributes interfere with that process!

Week 2 - A Dialogue, not a Monologue: Walking in your Horse’s Hooves

Horses communicate through their senses and body language, whereas people love words and thinking. In this week, we will explore how you can become more horse-like in your movement, posture and sensory communication.

Week 3 - Mind/Body communication - an embodied and conscious approach to training

The quality of our presence affects those around us, and that includes our horses. There are times when we need to increase our presence, while at others, we need to know how to be smaller. This week we will play with changing our size, width, length - you name it, we’ll explore it!

Week 4 - Be Present - Seeing, Sensing and Engaging with your Horse’s World

Week 4 takes us into the realm of present-moment attention, living in the here and now, and learning how to observe from a different stand point to our usual familiar place. An absolute necessity if we want to deepen our understanding and experience the sensory world of our horses.

Week 5 - Finding the Focus (yet Remaining Adaptable!)

It is important to know what your aims are and to understand those tasks which will help you to reach them. Sometimes though, it’s hard to identify what we truly want. In this week, we will work together to clarify what motivates you to ride, why you want to be with horses, and how to keep going when the going gets tough.

Week 6 - Happy Horse, Happy Rider

Do you allow yourself to feel satisfied with your work? Do you end a session with a sense of achievement? In this last week, we will discuss how in our action-oriented world, it really pays off to slow down, pause, and savour those moments when your work is done for the day. It is in the ‘space between’ that we can find the clarity for the next creative moment to emerge in the training process.

"For me, the concept of elbow hip connection, the bridge and kneeling seat have been instrumental in helping me develop a better connection. I find I feel things more subtly when I’m out hacking but not so much in the arena. Perhaps I am more relaxed out of the arena as is my horse. I seem to put less pressure on myself or my horse to get things right. At the moment I feel there are so many things I need to work on myself as well as with my horse. “Hello everbody, my name is Yvonne. I'm a holistic equine therapist in Northern Germany. This is the course I have been waiting for! When I started Feldenkrais 10 years ago, I had several herniated vertebral discs, was in severe back pain, and felt really crooked. I was very unhappy because I could not find my center and didn't know how to change it. The first thing I learned in the Feldenkrais group sessions was, that it is okay not to be perfect. It helped so much to notice that it is all about becoming aware of how my posture and my body confirmation are not about judging... I then could leave the state of wrong and right behind me and enter the world of exploration and finding what feels good for me. On the mat practicing, I learned a lot about the rider's seat and why some positions are counterproductive on the horse. Needless to say, my back pain completely vanished.
I started to take some habits of the Feldenkrais lessons into the arena. For example, when I get on a horse now, I start with a body scan: how do I sit (literally), how does my pelvis move, How is the horse today, his energy, how are the hindlegs moving.... and so on. I do the same with my students. It helps bring them into the moment and get connected with the horse. This was a good start, but I wanted more! I wished so badly for an instructor who would combine classical dressage with Feldenkrais. Who was able to put lessons together that addressed specifically riding-related movements. You can imagine HOW HAPPY I was when I found Shana and Thomas Ritter. The moment I found out, they were working with Catherine McCrum a Feldenkrais teacher. Taking The Aware Rider course, took my riding to the next level. It didn't bring big changes for me, but many small ones which make a big difference in the quality. I can't wait to learn more.
