OctoberĀ 2024:
Flexion
Flexion
October is a month which, wherever you are in the world, you are no doubt experiencing the shifting of the weather. It is either turning warmer and heading into Spring and Summer if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, or it is cooling off and you are heading into Autumn and Winter if you are in the Northern Hemisphere.Ā The beauty of this is that, regardless of where you are, this is the PERFECT riding weather and most likely, it has you thinking ahead to what you will be working on with your horse in the next months.Ā
With this in mind, we have an amazing month in store for you in Ritterize.
Just like the seasons are cyclical, so is the nature of learning and training and this was never more true than with Dressage. For years we have mentioned this aspect in various trainings and articles, but we have never explicitly talked about this topic on its own and we think it is about time.
We wanted to talk about how you can best strategize your own approach to learning by understanding the learning is not linear. It has its ups and downs, but it also progresses like a spiral meaning that as you learn more, you will find that when you revisit earlier concepts, you see it all in a new light. In fact, it is extremely beneficial to revisit the core concepts periodically, because each time you do so, you will find you get more out of it. It deepens your understanding of the principles and entire training process.Ā
This also applies to the training of the horse. Just as you are the student of Dressage, so is your horse and your horseās progress follows this same sort of cyclical pattern. We are going to talk about how you can use this to benefit and enrich your training experience with your horse, and how this is actually in absolute accordance with the teachings of the old masters of classical dressage.Ā
Additionally this month, we will be holding a deep dive Masterclass Training on Flexion. What is it? What is it not? What does it mean for the training of your horse? And even more importantly, what does it mean for the training of your horse right now, where your horse is right NOW in his/her training? This should be a really great training that helps to round out your understanding of bend and engagement, which when combined with flexion, lead to collection.Ā
The featured riding exercise this month is called, āTime Warp.ā Whether youāre a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or not (no worries if you are not, itās not necessary!), you will find that this exercise that is ājust a jump to the left and then a step to the rightā will be JUST the bit of fun that you are looking for to enliven your training this month - and also develop the skills your horse needs to improve flexion!Ā
Catherine has selected a Feldenkrais lesson this month called, āTilting the Head to Mobilise the Pelvisā which has the uncanny power to reveal the correlation between the lateral flexion of your head and neck and the way that this awakens the lateral flexion in all of your vertebrae. In the end, you realize how this enables you to sit more evenly on your seat bones and lighten either seat bones deliberately, with ease. What a powerful lesson to complement this monthās themes!
As always, we will wrap up the month with a Members-only Hot Seat session for the āTime Warpā riding exercise. This is a live session where Thomas will choose several member-submitted videos to to provide feedback, tips, and suggestions for improvement. Even if your video is not selected to be featured or you choose not to submit footage, you are sure to come away with tips and pointers from this session which you can put to use in your own riding right away.Ā

What is the Aware Rider Exploration About?
How can we improve how we move ultimately with the aim of having a better relationship with our horses: One in which we can listen to ourselves as well as listen to them in such a way that they hear what we're saying. This is a conversation about the conversation we have with our horses.
